Indiana Ribbon was founded in 1951 by engineer J.J. Thayer. Mr. Thayer graduated from Purdue University and members of his family still own the business today. Joe Hickman is President, Dave Hickman is Vice President, and sister Jane is a stockholder in the family business in Wolcott, IN. Joe, Dave and Jane are grandchildren to J.J. Thayer. Mr. Glen Hickman is their retired father still providing valuable guidance as needed. J.J. Thayer's great granddaughter, Greta Hickman Dutton, started with Indiana Ribbon in 2003 and is involved with Sales, Marketing and Art.
Mr. J.J. Thayer designed and built various bow making machines still in use today. These machines allowed bows to be made with peel off adhesive pads for immediate use. Some bows are preformed while others have to be fluffed out. These machines allowed for quick size changes as well as increasing or decreasing the number of loops in a bow. Mr. Thayer built a machine for manufacturing a "rose bow". This bow was a look alike of the flower by its same name. Unfortunately, the ribbon used was a special type no longer available to Indiana Ribbon.
Indiana Ribbon developed business relationships with several liquor companies when pre-made bows were used by the millions to adorn bottles. Key partnerships emerged to help create opportunities selling end users through packaging distributors. Additionally, those manufacturing other packaging products such as gift-wrap, tissue, and boxes were valuable allies in Indiana's growth. Indiana Ribbon also started manufacturing cardboard spools in many sizes for other ribbon extruders, mills, and weaving companies. Many customers today require 4-color art for their flange ends, barcodes and special packaging to meet marketplace requirements.
1980's
The 1980's saw new sales growth with major Party Store chains, Fundraising companies, Department Stores, and Mail Order Firms.
1990's
In 1993, the Spool division moved to another location in Wolcott providing much more needed space for packaging, bow bagging, and heat-sealing operations. The Elegant Expressions Gift Wrap Packs were started that year as well, yet another way to use bows and ribbons directed to corporate and holiday gift giving. During the busy season, Indiana Ribbon had over 300 employees.
2000's
As other U.S. companies started buying overseas, Indiana Ribbon remained committed to manufacturing and selling only USA made products. Custom printed gift packaging items including tissue, gift wrap, stickers, and gift cards were developed to meet the growing needs of the promotional products industry.
